Preparing for your newborn?

Reasons why you NEED to book that newborn photoshoot.

Let’s fast forward four years.

Your baby is about to begin big school. You chat with the other mummies at the school gate in sheer disbelief.

“It seems only yesterday that we were at baby sensory together,” you say.

Your heart is wrenched – their babyhood is officially over. You can’t remember when you blinked from holding that beautiful newborn baby in your arms. It all seems such a blur.

I know because this is me. This September my big boy will begin school. My heart will break – this will mark the end to his babyhood. My baby – the one who made me a mother.

…And I have no real recollection of him as a newborn. Sure, I have all the phone snaps (this was before I became a photographer). But I don’t really know what he was like – I don’t feel it.

I don’t know what Theo’s tiny, paper-thin fingernails looked like or his flaky toes. I can’t remember whether he had those perfect pearly milk spots across his tiny button nose, or whether his little ears and shoulders were adorned in newborn fuzz.

I just don’t know.

And I’ve lost out.

COMPLETELY.

Lost out on a chance to hold him once again in my mind in all that newness.

You see, when you admire your images years on I want you to feel it in your bones. For those images to take you back in time, so you can soak them in, breathe in that “newborn-ness” once again. It really is the shortest window and we new mothers with our cracked, sore nipples, stitches and bags under the eyes dare to blink.

So in answer to the question – “Do I need to book a newborn session?”

… If you want to have no regrets… yes! Your images will only ever increase in value over time. It will NEVER be a case of, “We didn’t need to buy those.” Instead it’ll be, “Thank goodness we did.”

Times are tough – I get that. And the expense of a new baby can be so overwhelming! I’ve been there. Cut back on the designer pram – the wheels will be dirty after one use. Cut back on the baby paraphernalia – babies really don’t want for anything other than love, warmth and food. Cut back on the baby shower – book a meal instead where everyone pays for themselves.

But whatever you do.. please, please don’t cut back on preserving the memories.

Sincerely, one mummy to another.
